The fundamental purpose in doing a
Risk Assessment is to identify and document the worst-probable emergencies that could
realistically happen. It can assist in reducing potential liabilities.
EMERGENCY PLANNING
Although the primary emphasis should be on prevention, rather
than on reactive or Emergency Response measures, the very nature of human activity
dictates that emergencies can and will occur. Through appropriate preparation or emergency
planning, the risk, loss and damage resulting from such emergencies can be minimized.
We utilize CSA Standard CAN/CSA-Z731-95, Emergency Planning for
Industry, as the cornerstone to the development or enhancement of an Emergency Plan. A
Plan must be concise and well organized with sufficient detail to ensure quick access to
critical information required during an emergency. The amount of information involved in
the Plan will be determined by the potential risk identified. Wherever possible, the Plan
will embody the concept "small problems require only small solutions".
We welcome the opportunity to share our experience in Emergency
Planning to assist you in your endeavour to have a safe and compliant worksite.
ISO 14000
There are five major elements of the ISO 14000 Family of
Standards, specifically ISO 14001: Environmental Management Standard
- Environmental Policy
- Planning
- Implementation and Operation
- Checking and Corrective Action
- Management Review
These elements interact with each other to form the framework of
an integrated, systematic approach to environmental management, with the ultimate result
being continual improvement of the overall system.
The five elements actually build upon each other, with
Environmental Policy being the first tier in the structure, the base which supports the
entire framework of the EMS.
Although ISO 14001 is not meant to replace legal/regulatory
schemes, it can serve to augment existing regulatory programs worldwide.
